Artists of Colour Initiative

The Artists of Colour Initiative (AOC) is a musical theatre scholarship competition designed to provide financial assistance and industry support to exceptionally talented theatre performers, based in Australia, that identify as Bla(c)k, Indigenous or People of Colour.

The initiative, founded by Tarik Frimpong, was born from a recognition of the underrepresentation of Bla(c)k and Indigenous people,
as well as People Of Colour in the Australian theatre industry.
The aim of the scholarship is to ensure participation within the field of Musical Theatre amongst these marginalised communities.

Stage A Change

STAGE A CHANGE is a group of theatre professionals who believe that all performers, regardless of race or colour, should have the opportunity to pursue a career in the performing arts. Our goal is to create more professional performance opportunities for actors of colour throughout Australia – we are changing the faces of theatre.

Equity Diversity Committee

The EDC is a committee of Equity members who run campaigns to make the performing arts industry more inclusive, accessible and diverse. It is the peak performer body in the industry making positive change for performers with diverse experiences. The committee is made up of diverse performers including performers with disability, First Nations, CALD, LGBTQIA+ and women performers but allies are welcome to stay in the loop as supporters. The EDC has played a pivotal role in industry action such as The 2020 Rob Guest Endowment, Darlinghurst Theatre Company's A Chorus Line casting and creating a Diversity Showcase to support performers.  The committee is working on a range of campaigns from experiences of discrimination in training institutions to unpaid cultural consulting. The EDC's ability to make change relies solely on membership. It is a committee by members for members. If you're keen to get involved or support the EDC's work in any way please email jenna.schroder@meaa.org
